The Battle

History & Significance

Sandown Castle at Deal was the third of the three Henry VIII Downs forts seized during the Second Civil War Kentish rising in 1648. Its garrison held out alongside Deal and Walmer Castle until Parliamentary forces and the loyal fleet under Warwick isolated the position and forced its surrender.
