History & Significance

The poet Claudian records that Stilicho (de facto ruler of the western empire) conducted or organised a campaign in Britain around 398-400 AD, winning victories over Picts, Scots, and Saxons. Claudian writes of "Orkney drenched in Saxon blood" and "ice-bound Thule." However, Stilicho also withdrew the Twentieth Legion from Britain to deal with the Visigoths threatening Italy — stripping Britain of yet another defensive formation. The campaign shows Britain was still considered worth defending.
