History & Significance

Penda assembled a great coalition army including Æthelhere of East Anglia and thirty lesser kings and lords to destroy Oswiu. Oswiu offered enormous tribute including gold ornaments but Penda refused and advanced. The refusal of tribute led to the Battle of the River Winwaed where Penda met his end. This final campaign shows the extent of Mercian hegemony.
