History & Significance

Between 704 and 716 five Northumbrian kings were killed or deposed. Eadwulf was expelled after two months, Osred was killed, Cenred abdicated to Rome. The chronic instability of the Northumbrian throne after Nechtansmere contrasted sharply with Mercian stability and was a major reason for Northumbrian decline relative to Mercia in the eighth century.
