At Tillyangus the Gordons under Adam Gordon killed Black Arthur Forbes in a fierce clan engagement that effectively broke Forbes military power in Strathdon. The victory was part of a Gordon campaign during the civil wars of Mary Queen of Scots regency period. The Forbes clan would later be absorbed into the Covenanting cause against the Catholic Gordons.
