History & Significance

Alhred was expelled by the Northumbrian nobles and people in 774. Northumbria had become deeply unstable: between 758 and 796 eight kings were killed or expelled. Alcuin lamented this as divine punishment. The instability made Northumbria ripe for Danish conquest a century later.
