The Battle

History & Significance

Prior to the night march on Sedgemoor, royal cavalry made demonstrations and patrols on the Bridgwater road to monitor Monmouth's force. A skirmish between rebel and royal cavalry on this road formed part of the intelligence gathering before the final night action. Monmouth watched the royal camp from the church tower of Bridgwater before deciding on the night attack.
