The Battle

History & Significance

Norse raiders attacked Iona in 825 and martyred the monk Blathmac who refused to reveal the hiding place of the relics of St Columba. He was torn limb from limb. The attack forced the final transfer of Columba's relics to Dunkeld in mainland Scotland for safety. This raid ended Iona's role as the primary centre of Scottish Christianity — a consequence of Viking raids that permanently reshaped the religious geography of Scotland.
