After the Battle of Gainsborough in July 1643, Newcastle retook the town and reinforced it as a Royalist base on the Trent. Parliamentary forces made further attempts to invest Gainsborough through the autumn of 1643 as the struggle for Lincolnshire continued. The town remained contested throughout 1643 with both sides conducting operations toward it.
