The Battle

History & Significance

The battle of Deorham (Dyrham in Gloucestershire) is one of the most geographically consequential battles in English history. Three British kings were killed — Conmail, Condidan, and Farinmail. Bath, Gloucester, and Cirencester were taken. Most crucially, the victory drove a permanent wedge between the Britons of Wales and those of the southwest (Devon and Cornwall), ending the possibility of coordinated British resistance. The Welsh were now permanently separated from the West Welsh. England's cultural geography was set.
