History & Significance

Stamford was one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw — the principal Danish urban centres of the East Midlands. Edward the Elder received its submission in 918 and built a new burh on the south bank of the River Welland, supplementing the existing Danish borough to the north. The systematic recovery of the Five Boroughs by Edward and Aethelflaed in 917-918 was one of the most important campaigns of the entire reconquest period, transforming the political geography of the Midlands.
