History & Significance

Aethelberht II of Kent ruled in the 720s as the last significant independent Kentish king before Offa era. Kent had been the most powerful English kingdom under Aethelberht I (d.616) and retained a proud identity. Aethelberht II issued charters and ruled independently, though the growing Mercian pressure would eventually end Kentish autonomy.
