Markenfield Hall near Ripon was home to the Markenfield family who had participated in the Northern Rising of 1569. After the Rising they became prime targets for recusancy enforcement. The raids on Markenfield and the associated Neville connection illustrate how the government used recusancy law as a financial and social weapon against families that had previously shown military disloyalty.
