The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary cavalry caught Penruddock's Royalist force at South Molton in Devon on 14 March 1655, surrounding and capturing most of the insurgents. Penruddock and Sir Joseph Wagstaffe were taken prisoner. It was the terminal action of the western Royalist rising. Penruddock was subsequently tried and executed at Exeter.
