The Battle

History & Significance

At the Battle of Ellendun (near Swindon) in 825, Egbert of Wessex defeated Mercia. This was followed by a campaign in which the Mercian king Beornwulf was killed fighting the East Anglians who had revolted on hearing of Egbert's victory. Kent, Essex, Sussex and Surrey all submitted to Egbert.
