History & Significance

The survivors of Preston fled north and made a last stand behind the churchyard wall at Winwick; Parliamentary forces broke in and the fighting around the church was some of the most intense of the Second Civil War; Scottish bones from the churchyard were still being found during Victorian restoration work two centuries later.
