The Battle

History & Significance

When Yorkshire accepted Eric Bloodaxe as king, Eadred of England invaded and burned the ancient Minster at Ripon as punishment. On his return south, a Yorkshire rearguard ambushed his army at Castleford. The ambush was repulsed but the episode illustrated Yorkshire's resistance to southern English control even when nominally submitting to English overlordship.
