History & Significance

Knaresborough Castle, perched above the Nidd gorge, was one of the last major Yorkshire Royalist strongholds to fall after Marston Moor. The garrison held out for months. Parliamentary forces eventually blockaded it into submission. The castle's surrender removed the last Royalist garrison in the West Riding outside Pontefract.
