History & Significance

The main Covenanting army concentrated at Duns Law in Berwickshire under General Alexander Leslie, presenting Charles I with a professional Scottish force of 20,000 men on his northern border. The military demonstration was deliberately visible from the English lines across the Tweed. The King, unable to fight such a force with his own unprepared army, agreed to the Pacification of Berwick in June 1639.
