History & Significance

Ammianus Marcellinus records that in 360 AD Picts and Scots broke the treaty and were ravaging the frontier areas. Julian (then Caesar) sent Lupicinus with four units of light infantry — Heruli, Batavi, Moesian auxiliaries — to deal with the crisis. This represents one of the better-documented specific Pictish raids, demonstrating that seaborne raiding was becoming a major strategic threat.
