The Battle

History & Significance

The Regent Lennox (grandfather of James VI) was killed in a daring Marian raid on Stirling in September 1571. A party of Marian horsemen rode into Stirling during a Parliament session, seized several lords, and in the confusion Lennox was shot. He died of his wound — the second Regent to be killed in the minority of James VI. The raid demonstrated how permeable even Stirling was to surprise attack and deepened the civil war chaos.
