History & Significance

London's trained bands were the largest single body of militia in England and their allegiance was crucial to whichever side controlled the capital. From late 1641 through early 1642, Parliament worked to ensure control of the London trained bands through parliamentary-sympathetic officers. The musters and drilling of the London trained bands in this period were an open military preparation that Charles I could not prevent after his failed attempt on the Five Members.
