The Battle

History & Significance

During the complex 917 campaign, the Chronicle records a Danish attack on Wigingamere (unidentified, possibly in Essex or Cambridgeshire) that was repulsed. The fact that multiple Danish forces were simultaneously attacking English positions in different places shows that even as the reconquest was succeeding, the Danes were still capable of launching coordinated counter-offensives against Edward's burh network.
