The Battle

History & Significance

James IV personally led a royal fleet to Tarbert on the second of his Hebridean expeditions to enforce the 1493 forfeiture of the Lordship of the Isles. Tarbert Castle was repaired and garrisoned as a royal base to project Crown authority into the western isles. Several chiefs were arrested and taken back to court as hostages. James issued justice ayres and received submissions at Tarbert, the symbolic gateway to the Hebrides.
