Shotover Hill east of Oxford was used as a Parliamentary artillery position during the siege of Oxford in 1646, supplementing the Headington Hill batteries in enfilading the eastern defences. The high ground of Shotover gave Parliamentary guns a commanding angle of fire over the Oxford east gate and its outworks.
