Southampton was one of England most important commercial ports and royal embarkation points, and the 1539 garrison of its harbour defences was a critical element of Henry VIII coastal defence programme. The proximity of the town to the Solent anchorage made it a natural secondary target for any enemy force that penetrated the Calshot and Hurst lines.
