History & Significance

Oswine of Deira, praised by Bede as the most gentle of men, was betrayed to Oswiu when he disbanded his army to avoid shedding Christian blood against his kinsman. His murder at Gilling was considered such a crime that Oswiu founded a monastery there in expiation. It completed Northumbrian unity under Oswiu.
