History & Significance

Offa of Mercia had the South Saxon ealdorman Oslac executed, removing one of the last independent South Saxon magnates and completing Mercian domination of Sussex. Oslac had been one of the witnesses to South Saxon charters with some independent standing. His execution marked the final absorption of effective South Saxon autonomy into the Mercian sphere.
