The Battle

History & Significance

Ealdorman Æthelmund of the Hwicce crossed the Thames at Kempsford to raid Wiltshire and was met by Ealdorman Weohstan of Wiltshire. Both ealdormen were killed in the battle. The engagement at Kempsford was one of the last flickers of the Mercian-Wessex frontier warfare before Egbert's dominance was established.
