History & Significance

Government dragoons were ambushed in the Enterkin Pass in the hills above Nithsdale in 1684 by a small Covenanting band that freed several prisoners being escorted to execution. The Enterkin rescue was one of the few successful direct actions by Covenanting remnants during the Killing Time and demonstrated that even in the darkest period of the Killing Time, armed resistance continued in the remote hill country of Dumfriesshire.
