History & Significance

Shortly after taking the Northumbrian throne, Edwin expelled Ceretic of Elmet and absorbed the last surviving British kingdom east of the Pennines. Elmet had persisted as a sub-Roman British realm in the Leeds area for over a century. Its conquest completed Anglian control of Yorkshire.
