History & Significance

Bernera Barracks garrison near Glenelg conducted armed patrols through Knoydart and Glenelg enforcing the Disarming Act among MacDonell and MacRae tenants. The western Highlands were the most difficult terrain for government pacification and Bernera was the only garrison within reach.
