History & Significance

Durobrivae (Water Newton) in Northamptonshire was a major Roman industrial and military centre on Ermine Street, the great road north from London to Lincoln. Its proximity to the Iceni territory made it militarily sensitive during the Boudiccan revolt. Archaeological finds here include the earliest known hoard of Christian silver plate from Roman Britain. The site controlled the Nene valley route into the East Midlands and was a significant military supply depot for operations both north and west.
