The Battle

History & Significance

Malcolm III raided in cooperation with Edgar Atheling in 1070, giving military force to the English exile cause. The combined force expelled Norman lords from parts of Northumbria temporarily. William the Conqueror responded with the Harrying of the North -- the systematic devastation of Yorkshire and beyond that killed tens of thousands. The raid thus had catastrophic unintended consequences for northern England, and ultimately forced Malcolm to negotiate at Abernethy in 1072.
