History & Significance

Ripon Minster, one of the great religious centres of Northumbrian Christianity founded by St Wilfrid, was among the monasteries sacked during the Danish conquest of Yorkshire. The crypt of Wilfrid's original church survives beneath the present Minster — the oldest complete Saxon crypt in England. The community scattered but some relics were preserved, allowing eventual refoundation.
