History & Significance

Following Roger de Montgomery's death and the Revolt of the Earls, the Shrewsbury earldom faced challenges on its western flank from Welsh rulers who sought to exploit Norman internal divisions. The defence of Shrewsbury's western approaches required continuous garrisoning of border castles and episodic punitive expeditions into Welsh territory to maintain the intimidating Norman presence on the frontier.
