The Battle

History & Significance

The Cornish beacon chain formed the western terminus of the national Armada warning system. Cornwall had invested heavily in its beacon network following the 1545 French raids and the 1539 Device Fort construction, and the system performed flawlessly in 1588. The Cornish militia was among the first county forces to muster in response to the Armada.
