The Dorset county muster at Dorchester in 1588 brought together the county militia under the Lord Lieutenant in response to the Armada alarm. The trained bands were rapidly deployed to the coastal forts and beaches, with Portland Castle receiving priority reinforcement due to its position on the most exposed headland of the Dorset coast. The Dorset muster demonstrated how effectively the county trained band system, created in the 1570s under Lord Burghley reforms, could mobilise a substantial force at short notice.
