The Chronicle and Welsh annals record Mercian military activity in Wales in the mid-890s. Aethelred of Mercia, as Alfred son-in-law and effective ruler of English Mercia, maintained pressure on the Welsh border kingdoms both to secure the Mercian flank and to reinforce Alfred claim to overlordship of Britain. The Welsh campaigns were complementary to the anti-Danish operations and demonstrated that English Mercia was fighting on multiple fronts simultaneously.
