The Battle

History & Significance

Applecross was founded by Maelrubha of Bangor in 673 and became one of the most important monasteries on the west coast of Scotland. Its exposed position on the Applecross peninsula made it a target for Norse raiders using the Inner Sound. Norse attacks on Applecross disrupted one of the principal centres of Christianity in Wester Ross and contributed to the collapse of the Gaelic monastic network in the northwest.
