Radcot Bridge over the upper Thames was a contested crossing in 1645 during Parliamentary operations to encircle Oxford and cut its communications with the west. Control of the medieval bridge was important for isolating Oxford from the Royalist garrisons at Faringdon and the route toward Bristol and the Royalist west.
