The Battle

History & Significance

A rare defeat for the mighty Offa of Mercia, who was repulsed at Otford by the men of Kent. Though Offa ultimately subjugated Kent, this battle shows that even the most powerful Anglo-Saxon king faced organised resistance. The Kentish kingdom had a strong Roman and Frankish cultural heritage and resisted Mercian absorption longer than most.
