As the Jacobite army moved south toward Edinburgh in September 1745, advance cavalry passed through Falkirk. Government militia in the town dispersed on the approach of the Highland cavalry. The town was held briefly by the Jacobites — a prelude to its more extended occupation during the Falkirk campaign of January 1746. The approach through Falkirk demonstrated the Jacobites' ability to project power across central Scotland. Local authorities submitted and provided supplies. The episode showed how thoroughly Argyll's Stirling position had been bypassed by the Fords of Frew crossing.
