Eardwulf was driven from Northumbria around 806 but restored in 808 with Carolingian support, evidenced by his embassy to Charlemagne and Pope Leo III. The Carolingian intervention on behalf of an English king shows the international dimension of Northumbrian politics. Eardwulf's restoration was one of the few successful reversals in the chain of Northumbrian coups.
