History & Significance

After serving as the Royalist capital of the west for nearly three years and housing the Royal court, Exeter surrendered to Fairfax. Queen Henrietta Maria had given birth there in 1644 and escaped to France; the young Princess Henrietta was left behind and later became Duchess of Orleans.
