The Battle

History & Significance

During Cnut's initial invasion in 1015, Danish forces ravaged Dorset, Wiltshire, and Somerset seeking to break the West Saxon heartland before Edmund Ironside could organise resistance. Cnut's operations in Wessex in 1015 were designed to strip resources from the region that had always resisted Danish conquest. Edmund Ironside was being obstructed by Eadric Streona from mustering the English force effectively, leaving the countryside open to plunder.
