History & Significance

Offa executed Aethelberht II of Kent, ending the last Kentish royal line. Some sources suggest Aethelberht had attempted to assert independence after Otford. The execution was condemned but Offa had the power to enforce it. Thereafter Kent had no independent kings, only Mercian sub-kings or bishops. The Kentish royal dynasty that had ruled since the fifth century was extinguished.
