History & Significance

The Lancaster executions formed part of Henry VIII's systematic suppression of the northern counties after Bigod's revolt. Lancashire, with its strong monastic connections, was targeted particularly. The Abbots of Whalley and Sawley were among those executed, and their abbeys immediately dissolved. The county would remain under close royal supervision for decades.
