History & Significance

One of the most celebrated episodes of the Civil War. Brilliana Harley, Lady of Brampton Bryan Castle in Herefordshire, defended the castle against Royalist sieges while her husband Sir Robert Harley sat in the Long Parliament in London. She withstood the first siege of 1643 — then died in October 1643, possibly from the strain. Her son Edward continued the defence until the second siege of 1644 forced surrender. Her letters to her husband during the siege are masterpieces of Civil War literature.
