History & Significance

In July and August 1650, Cromwell led the New Model Army into Scotland. The Scots under David Leslie refused to give battle on unfavourable ground and drew Cromwell through East Lothian. At Musselburgh, English forces drove in Scottish outposts. The campaign was a masterclass of strategic avoidance by Leslie until political and church pressure forced him to abandon his strong position — leading directly to the catastrophe at Dunbar in September 1650.
